about

Iain Macrae is on a mission to make spaces into places where people want to be through great design and training those who want to know more. He aims to improve the environment we live, work and play in, with the right application of light whilst limiting the impact on our planet. Part of this mission is a focus on people, putting them at the centre of any design. Something he talks about with passion as a professional speaker, trainer and moderator.

A professional and Chartered Engineer in lighting, a Past President and Fellow of the Society of Light and Lighting and a member of the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers he fell into lighting from Mechanical Engineering and has seen many revolutions in lighting technology whilst at Thorn Lighting, Zumtobel Group and WILA Lighting. He has also authored or peer-reviewed material for some of the leading lighting guides and standards plus provided expertise on many world-renowned projects, think Wembley Stadium and Heathrow Terminal 5 to name just two.

The final part of Iain’s mission is to bring lighting professionals together in coordinated and lifelong learning so that lighting becomes truly a recognised profession. He mentors both professionals and students. He teaches Emergency Lighting, advanced lighting certificates and Dialux Evo at the Lighting Industry Academy and HND/HNC courses accredited by the University of South Wales. He also runs LightUnwrapped a training organisation dedicated to the same.

In 2016 Iain Macrae was presented with The Lighting Award for the ongoing commitment to lighting and the Society of Light and Lighting.
